What is the Iran Nuclear Deal?
The Iran nuclear deal is an agreement that aimed to make sure Iran's nuclear program was only for peaceful purposes. It was designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In return, many international sanctions (economic penalties) against Iran would be lifted.
Who Made the Deal?
The agreement was made between Iran and a group of powerful countries called the P5+1. This group includes the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council:
Plus, Germany was also part of the P5+1. The European Union (EU) also played a role in reaching this agreement.
Why Was the Deal Made?
For many years, there were worries that Iran's nuclear program might be used to build nuclear weapons. Iran always said its program was for peaceful energy and medical uses. The goal of the JCPOA was to create a way for international inspectors to check Iran's nuclear sites. This would ensure Iran was following the rules and not secretly building weapons. In exchange for these checks, the countries involved agreed to remove many of the economic sanctions that were hurting Iran's economy.
What Happened After the Deal?
The deal went into effect in 2016. However, on May 8, 2018, the United States officially left the agreement. This happened after President Donald Trump decided to add back harsher sanctions on Iran. The other countries involved in the deal, like China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom, continued to support the agreement.
