Ireen Wüst is a famous Dutch speed skater. She was born on April 1, 1986. Ireen is known for being one of the most successful speed skaters ever. She has won many medals at the Winter Olympic Games.

Ireen Wüst is special because she won at least one gold medal in five Winter Olympics in a row! This is a huge achievement. She is also the first athlete to win individual gold medals at five different Olympics. She holds the record for the most Olympic medals in speed skating, with thirteen in total. Ireen is also the youngest and oldest speed skating gold medalist at the Winter Games for the Netherlands.

Ireen Wüst's Skating Journey

Ireen Wüst started her speed skating career early. She first competed in a big Dutch championship in 2003. The next year, she won a silver medal at the World Junior Championships. This showed she was a rising star in the sport.

In 2005, Ireen joined the Dutch team for the European Championships. She finished fourth, which was a great start for a young skater. Later that year, she became the World Junior Champion in Finland.

Olympic Games in Turin (2006)

Ireen Wüst made her Olympic debut at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. She was only 19 years old! She won a gold medal in the 3000 meter race. This made her the youngest Dutch Winter Olympic champion ever. She also won a bronze medal in the 1500 meter race. After the season, she was named the best Dutch Sportswoman of the Year.

World and European Success (2007-2008)

After her Olympic success, Ireen continued to win. In 2007, she became the World Allround Champion in her home country, the Netherlands. She also won two gold medals at the World Single Distance Championships. In 2008, she won the European Allround title. She also helped her team win a gold medal in the team pursuit at the World Distance Championships.

Olympic Games in Vancouver (2010)

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada, Ireen Wüst won another gold medal. This time, it was in the 1500 meter race.

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia were very successful for Ireen. She won two gold medals: one in the 3000 meters and another in the team pursuit. She also earned three silver medals in the 1000m, 1500m, and 5000m races. This made her the most decorated athlete at those Games.

Olympic Games in Pyeongchang (2018)

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, Ireen Wüst won a gold medal in the 1500 meters. She also took home a silver medal in the 3000 meters. This was her fourth gold medal in a row at different Olympics. She became the first female Winter Olympian to win nine individual medals.

Olympic Games in Beijing (2022)

Ireen Wüst continued to make history at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. She won another gold medal in the 1500 meters. She set a new Olympic record time in this race. This win made her the first athlete ever to win individual gold medals at five different Olympic Games. She also won a bronze medal in the team pursuit event.

Awards and Family History

Ireen Wüst has received special honors for her amazing achievements. In 2006, she was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This was for winning gold at the Turin Olympics. In 2022, she was given an even higher honor, becoming a Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau. This award recognized her outstanding career in sports.

Her last name, Wüst, has a special letter "ü" which is not common in Dutch. This comes from a German ancestor who moved to the Netherlands many years ago.
