Early Life and Beginnings
Irene Rich was born in Buffalo, New York. When she was 17, she got married and had her first daughter, Frances. Her daughter later became a well-known sculptor.
After her first marriage ended, Irene married Charles Henry Rich. They had another daughter named Martha Jane. This marriage also ended after four years. To support herself and her daughters, Irene started working in real estate. In 1918, she moved to Hollywood and began her acting career as an extra in films.
A Star on Screen and Radio
Irene Rich worked with the famous actor Will Rogers in eight movies. Some of these films include Water Water Everywhere (1920) and Jes' Call Me Jim (1920). She often played characters who were elegant society women. For example, she starred in the 1925 film Lady Windermere's Fan. Later in her career, she played a frontier wife and mother in films like John Wayne's Angel and the Badman and John Ford's Fort Apache.
In the 1930s, Irene Rich became very popular on the radio. From 1933 to 1944, she hosted her own show called Dear John, also known as The Irene Rich Show. This program featured short, ongoing dramas. Her co-star on the show was actor Gale Gordon.
Irene also performed on stage in plays. She appeared in Seven Keys to Baldpate in 1935 and As the Girls Go in 1948.
Later Life and Legacy
