Iring Fetscher (born 1922, died 2014) was a German expert in political science. He was known for his research on the ideas of important thinkers like Hegel and Marxism.
Early Life and Education
Iring Fetscher was born on March 4, 1922, in a town called Marbach am Neckar in Germany. He grew up in Dresden. After World War II, he went to university. He studied in Tübingen and Paris.
In 1950, he earned his doctorate degree. This is a high academic degree. Later, in 1959, he completed another important academic step called a "habilitation." This allowed him to teach as a professor. His work focused on the political ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Academic Career
From 1963 to 1988, Fetscher was a professor at the Goethe University Frankfurt. He taught political science and social philosophy. He is sometimes linked to the "Frankfurt School" of thinkers. Other famous people from this group include Jürgen Habermas.
A scholar named Leszek Kołakowski saw Fetscher as a great historian of Marxism. He thought Fetscher had a thoughtful but critical view of these ideas.
Awards and Recognition
In 1993, Iring Fetscher received a special honor from France. He was inducted into the Order of Academic Palms (Ordre des Palmes Académiques). This award recognizes people who have done great things in education and culture.
Iring Fetscher passed away on July 19, 2014.
