A Glimpse into Irishtown's Past
The Miwok People and Their Home
When early settlers first came to this area looking for gold and other mines, they found a "city of wigwams." These were the homes of the Miwok Native Americans. The Miwok also left behind signs of their lives. You can still find "bedrock mortars" in the stone. These are special holes in rocks. The Miwok used them like a mortar and pestle to grind food. They would crush acorns and other plants into flour. This shows how they prepared their meals.
The Inn and Its Importance
Today, Irishtown is part of Pine Grove. A man named Albert Leonard lived here in 1854. He became Pine Grove's first postmaster. Albert built an inn in the area. An inn is like a small hotel or guesthouse. His inn became a very popular place for travelers to stop. It was a convenient spot for people journeying between the towns of Jackson and Clinton.
