Irmo is a town in South Carolina, United States. It is located in both Lexington and Richland counties. Irmo is a suburb of Columbia, the state capital. It is about 12 miles northwest of Columbia's city center. In 2020, about 11,569 people lived in Irmo.

History of Irmo
Irmo was officially started on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1890. The town was founded because a new railroad, the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, was opening nearby. The name "Irmo" was created by combining parts of the names of two important people who helped start the town: Captain C.J. Iredell and Henry Moseley.

Irmo covers a total area of about 6.86 square miles (17.77 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The town is located near Lake Murray, which is a popular spot for outdoor activities.

Arts and Culture in Irmo
Irmo is well-known for its annual Okra Strut festival. This festival started in 1973 as a way to raise money for a new library. It is named after the okra plant, which is a popular vegetable in the South.
The Okra Strut festival includes many fun events. These have featured a charity golf tournament, a street dance, and live entertainment. There are also carnival rides, cycling and running races, and displays of arts and crafts. A big parade is also a highlight of the festival.
