The Iroquois Museum is a special place that opened in 1981. It's located in the traditional homeland of the Mohawk Indians. The Mohawks are one of the original Five Nations that formed the powerful Iroquois Confederacy.

About the Museum

The Iroquois Museum, which moved to its Howes Cave location in 1992, is built to look like a traditional longhouse. Longhouses were very important to Iroquois culture. They were used as homes for large families and also for important tribal meetings or ceremonies.

The museum holds the largest collection of Iroquois art in the United States. Its main goal is to teach people about the amazing culture of the Six Tribes of the Iroquois. These tribes have lived in their territory for over 10,000 years!

Iroquois Culture Today

While many Iroquois people once lived mainly in New York, today many members of the Iroquois tribes live on First Nations reserves in Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Others still live in New York, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma. The museum's exhibits show both ancient traditions and modern Iroquois culture. For example, one exhibit in 2008 featured Native American baseball players.

Performing Arts

Inside the museum, there is also the Iroquois Performing Arts Amphitheater. This is a stage used for music and dance performances. These performances are based on traditional practices and stories from the Iroquois culture.

Museum Partnerships

The Iroquois Museum works with many other museums across the United States. These partnerships help share Iroquois culture and history with even more people. Some of their partners include:
