Wingellina or Irrunytju Community is a small Indigenous Australian community. It is located in Western Australia, about 1,700 kilometers (1,056 miles) north-east of Perth. The community is close to the border between Western Australia and South Australia. It is part of the Goldfields–Esperance region. The local language spoken in Wingellina is Pitjantjatjara.
The area around Wingellina has large granite hills. You can also find many mulga and mallee trees here. People in the community still do many traditional activities. These include hunting and gathering bush tucker. They also create beautiful carved wooden items.
Wingellina is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southwest of the Surveyor Generals Corner. This corner is where the borders of the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia meet. The community is located in the Gibson Desert and Great Victoria Desert.
History of Wingellina
The Wingellina community was started in the 1980s. Most of the people who came to live there were from the Warburton mission. These people have strong spiritual and family connections to the land in this region.
Like other communities nearby, some people moved to Wingellina from South Australia. They moved because of rocket tests that were happening in an area called Woomera.
