The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks are a huge collection of special places in Orange County, California. They are often called the Irvine Ranch Open Space. These landmarks are protected areas, meaning they are kept safe for nature and people to enjoy.

This amazing area covers almost 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of land. That's about 78 square miles! This land used to be part of a big ranch called the Irvine Ranch. A large part of these landmarks, about 40,000 acres (16,000 ha), was recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 2006. It also became a California Natural Landmark in 2008. This shows how important and unique these natural spaces are.

The Irvine Ranch area has a very old and complete record of Earth's history in its rocks. This record goes back 80 million years! You can find different types of plant communities here. These include coastal sage scrub and chaparral. There are even rare woodlands of a special tree called the Tecate cypress.

A Look Back in Time: History of the Ranch

The Irvine Ranch started a long time ago, in the 1860s. Back then, it was a big cattle ranch. Ranchers raised cows on the land.

However, by the late 1970s, the cattle business was no longer part of the ranch. Over time, parts of the ranch were set aside to become the natural landmarks we see today. This helps protect the land for future generations.
