In 2010, about 1,405 people lived in Irwin. This community was once a busy place, especially when Springs Industries, a large textile company, was active from the 1950s to 2002. Many of the small "mill homes" in Irwin were built for the workers of this company.

Two creeks help form the natural borders of Irwin. Cane Creek runs along the northern edge of the community. Rum Creek, which flows into Cane Creek, forms the southern border. All the water from these creeks eventually flows into the Catawba River.
