Isaak Markovich Khalatnikov (born October 17, 1919 – died January 9, 2021) was an important Soviet theoretical physicist. He made big discoveries in many areas of physics. These included general relativity (which explains gravity), quantum field theory (about tiny particles), and the theory of quantum liquids. He is famous for helping create the Landau-Khalatnikov theory of superfluidity. He also worked on the BKL conjecture in the theory of relativity.

A Life in Physics
Isaak Khalatnikov was born in Yekaterinoslav, which is now called Dnipro in Ukraine. His family was Ukrainian Jewish. He finished his physics degree in 1941 from Dnipropetrovsk State University. Later, in 1952, he earned his doctorate degree. His wife, Valentina, was the daughter of a famous revolutionary hero, Mykola Shchors.
Working with Lev Landau
Much of Khalatnikov's scientific work was done with or inspired by Lev Landau. Landau was another very famous physicist. Together, they developed the Landau-Khalatnikov theory. This theory helps explain superfluidity, which is when a liquid flows without any friction.
Studying the Universe
In 1970, Khalatnikov worked with two other scientists, Vladimir Belinski and Evgeny Lifshitz. They were inspired by a model called the mixmaster model. Together, they came up with what is now known as the BKL conjecture. This idea is about how the universe might have behaved at the very beginning. It's still considered one of the biggest unsolved puzzles in the study of gravity.
Leading a Research Institute
From 1965 to 1992, Khalatnikov was the director of the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in Moscow. This institute is a very important place for studying physics. He was chosen to be a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union in 1984. He received many awards for his work, including the Landau Gold Medal and the Marcel Grossmann Award. He was also a foreign member of the Royal Society of London, a very old and respected scientific group.
In Popular Culture
Isaak Khalatnikov was even shown in a movie! An actor named Georg Nikoloff played him in the 2014 film The Theory of Everything.
Isaak Khalatnikov lived a very long life. He passed away in Chernogolovka, Russia, on January 9, 2021, at the age of 101.
Awards and Recognition
Isaak Khalatnikov received many important awards for his contributions to science:
- Order "For Merit to the Fatherland", 3rd class (1999)
- Order of Alexander Nevsky (2020)
- Order of the October Revolution (1986)
- Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class (1985)
- Three Orders of the Red Banner of Labour (1954, 1956, 1975)
- Order of Friendship of Peoples (1979)
- Order of the Badge of Honour (1950)
- Stalin Prize, 2nd class (1953)
- Marcel Grossmann Award (2012) - This award was given for his discovery of a special solution to Einstein's equations. This solution describes how the universe might have started with a chaotic, changing singularity, known as the BKL singularity.
- An asteroid, 468725 Khalat, was named in his honor. This is a special way to remember his important work.
