Isabel Jewell (born July 19, 1907 – died April 5, 1972) was an American actress. She became well-known in the 1930s and early 1940s. Some of her famous movies include Ceiling Zero, Marked Woman, A Tale of Two Cities, and Gone with the Wind.

Isabel Jewell's Early Life
Isabel Jewell was born in Shoshoni, Wyoming, on July 19, 1907. Her father, Emory Lee Jewell, was a respected doctor and medical researcher. Isabel went to school at St. Mary's Academy in Minnesota. She also studied at Hamilton College in Kentucky.
Isabel Jewell's Acting Career
Isabel Jewell started her acting journey in theater groups. She performed for 87 weeks in Lincoln, Nebraska. Later, she got a role on Broadway in a play called Up Pops the Devil (1930). Critics really liked her performance in another play, Blessed Event (1932).
First Film Roles
Isabel Jewell made her first movie appearance in Blessed Event (1932). Warner Brothers studio brought her to Hollywood for the film version of Up Pops the Devil. She soon got many supporting roles in different movies during the early 1930s.
Memorable Movie Roles
Isabel often played characters like girlfriends of gangsters. You can see her in films such as Manhattan Melodrama (1934) and Marked Woman (1937). She also played a very different kind of role. In A Tale of Two Cities (1935), she was the seamstress. This character was sentenced to death alongside Sydney Carton, played by Ronald Colman.
Her most important role was Sally Bates in She Had to Choose. Isabel Jewell also appeared in other famous movies. These include Gone with the Wind (1939), where she played Emmy Slattery. She was also in Northwest Passage (1940) and High Sierra (1941). Another film she was in was the low-budget movie The Leopard Man (1943).
Later Career and Television
By the end of the 1940s, Isabel's movie roles became smaller. Sometimes, her name wasn't even listed in the credits, like in The Snake Pit. In the 1950s, she acted in radio shows, including This Is Your FBI.
In 1965, she played Madame Ahr in an episode of the TV show Gunsmoke. Her character was part of a circus group that robbed banks. Isabel Jewell's last films were Ciao! Manhattan (1972) and Sweet Kill (1973). Sweet Kill was the first movie directed by Curtis Hanson.
Isabel Jewell's Personal Life
Isabel Jewell was married three times. Her first marriage was to Lovell "Cowboy" Underwood when she was 19. This marriage was not widely known during her acting career.
In 1936, she married Owen Crump. They divorced in 1941. Soon after, in 1941, Isabel married actor Paul Marion. He was in the Army at the time. They separated in 1943 and divorced in 1944.
Isabel Jewell was a member of the Democratic Party. She supported Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 presidential election. She was also a practicing Episcopalian.
Isabel Jewell's Death
Isabel Jewell passed away in Los Angeles, California, on April 5, 1972. She was 64 years old. Her ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
Isabel Jewell's Legacy
In 1960, Isabel Jewell received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This honor recognized her important contributions to movies. Her star is located at 1560 Vine Street.
