History of Shoshoni
Shoshoni gets its name from the Shoshone people, a Native American tribe. Many Shoshone people live on the nearby Wind River Indian Reservation. The town started as a place for railroads and mining. It is located where U.S. Routes 20 and 26 meet. These roads were once part of the "Yellowstone Highway."
Many visitors come to Shoshoni in the summer. This is when the roads to Yellowstone National Park are open. People also stop here to camp and fish at Boysen Reservoir and Boysen State Park. Fishing contests, including ice fishing in winter, are popular at the reservoir.
Ranching has been a very important farming activity in the area for many years.
A famous businessman named Charles Henry King helped build a special building in Shoshoni. It was called the C.H. King Company and First Union Bank Building. This building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Charles Henry King was the grandfather of President Gerald Ford.
In 2004, a plant that processed mushrooms opened in Shoshoni. It used a lot of water. At first, people who were in prison helped work there. Later, the plant hired skilled workers from Guatemala. The plant had some issues with strong smells from its composting areas. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality looked into these issues. In 2006, the plant added a system to help control the odors. In 2020, a religious group called Iglesia Ni Cristo bought the facility.
