The Life of Ishman Bracey
Early Years and Music Beginnings
Ishman Bracey was born in a town called Byram, Mississippi. When he was about 16 years old, around 1917, he started playing his music at local dances and parties. He also worked as a waterboy for the Illinois Central Railroad. His very first song was recorded in Memphis in 1928. On that recording, he played the lead guitar, and another musician named Papa Charlie McCoy played the rhythm guitar alongside him.
His Unique Singing Style
In the 1920s, Ishman Bracey's songs were quite varied. He hadn't yet fully developed the style known as delta blues. One special thing about him was his voice. He was one of the few Mississippi blues musicians who sang with a nasal voice. This made his sound very unique.
Later Recordings and Voice Change
When Ishman Bracey recorded more songs in 1930, his voice had changed. It became deeper. Because of this, he couldn't sing some of his older songs as high as before, so they had to be adjusted. He recorded again in 1931 for Paramount Records. This time, he played with a group called The New Orleans Nehi Boys. A guitarist named Charles Taylor was also part of this group.
Ishman Bracey's Songs
Ishman Bracey recorded a total of 16 songs during his career. The original copies of his old 78-rpm records are very rare and valuable to blues music collectors. His most famous songs include "Trouble Hearted Blues" and "Left Alone Blues."
