Important Government Roles
Ishwari Prasad Gupta had many important jobs in the Indian government. These roles helped him serve the country in different ways.
Early Administrative Work
From 1975 to 1976, he worked as the Hill Commissioner in Manipur. This role involved helping manage the hilly regions of the state.
Then, he became the Chief Secretary for Arunachal Pradesh from 1976 to 1981. A Chief Secretary is the top administrative officer in a state or union territory.
Work in the Home Ministry
From 1981 to 1984, Mr. Gupta was a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. This ministry deals with internal security and domestic policy in India.
Later, from 1985 to 1988, he became an Additional Secretary in the same ministry.
Serving as Chief Secretary Again
After his time in the Home Ministry, he returned to Tripura to serve as its Chief Secretary once more. He had already worked there before.
Other Key Positions
From November 1990 to June 1991, he was an Advisor to the Governor of Assam. Governors are representatives of the President in Indian states.
Then, from June 1991 to February 1993, he worked as a Member of the Central Administrative Tribunal in New Delhi. This tribunal handles disputes related to government service.
State Election Commissioner Role
From October 1994 to February 1996, Mr. Gupta served as the State Election Commissioner. In this role, he was in charge of elections for several Union territories. These included the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
His last major role was as the Lieutenant governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He held this position from December 23, 1996, to May 25, 2001. The Lieutenant Governor is the head of a union territory, similar to a governor in a state.
Honored by Bangladesh
On March 27, 2012, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, honored Ishwari Prasad Gupta in Dhaka. She thanked him and other foreign friends for their important help during the Bangladesh Liberation War. This war led to Bangladesh becoming an independent country.
