Alaix was a strong supporter of the Liberals during the First Carlist War. This group supported Isabella II of Spain and her mother, Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, who was acting as queen.

Early Life and Military Career

Isidro de Alaix Fábregas started his military journey early. He fought in the Spanish War of Independence, which was a big conflict against Napoleon's forces.

Later, he also took part in military campaigns in South America. These campaigns were aimed at stopping the independence movements there.

Key Battles and Achievements

Alaix became famous during the First Carlist War. He led his troops to a major victory against the Carlist general Miguel Gómez Damas at the Battle of Villarrobledo.

This important win earned him a promotion to the rank of general. He also received the title of Viscount of Villarrobledo and the special Cross of Saint Ferdinand award.

Political Career

Isidro de Alaix Fábregas also had a significant career in politics. He became a senator for life, which meant he served in the Spanish parliament for the rest of his life.

He also held the important position of Minister of War. This role meant he was in charge of the country's military forces.

From December 9, 1838, to February 3, 1839, he even served as the temporary president of the Council of Ministers. This meant he was effectively the head of the Spanish government during that time.

The Vergara Embrace

As Minister of War, Alaix played a crucial role in ending the First Carlist War. He signed the agreement known as the Vergara Embrace. This agreement helped bring peace after a long and difficult conflict.

Because of his part in ending the war, he was given another important title: Count of Vergara.

Later Life

Isidro de Alaix Fábregas passed away in Madrid in 1853. He is remembered as a key figure in Spanish history, both as a military leader and a politician.
