Where is Trocadero Island?
This island covers an area of about 5.25 square kilometers (that's about 2 square miles). It sits in the southern part of the Bay of Cádiz, just southwest of a village called Puerto Real.
A main road, the Spanish national highway N443, crosses the northern part of the island. This road connects Puerto Real to the city of Cádiz. You might also hear about an industrial area nearby called Polígono El Trocadero, or a road ramp named El Trocadero. These names show how close they are to the island.
Why is it a Special Place?
Isla del Trocadero is part of a much larger protected area. This area is a natural park called Parque Natural de la Bahía de Cádiz, which stretches over 100 square kilometers. It's a very important wetland, which means it's a watery area that is home to many different plants and animals. It's also a key resting spot for birds that travel long distances during their migrations. This makes it a great place for bird watching.
How Can You Visit?
You can reach the island from the ports of Puerto Real and Matagorda. If you love nature, especially birds, visiting this island would be very interesting for you!
A Look Back in Time: History of the Island
For a very long time, Isla del Trocadero has been an important place for trade. This is why it got its name, "trader's island." It was also used as a place to fix and repair ships.
The San Luis Fort
At the southern tip of the island, there was a fort called San Luis Fort. This fort was part of the defenses that protected the Bay of Cádiz.
Today, the fort is in ruins, but it has an important story. French soldiers captured the fort during a battle on August 31, 1823. This event was called the Battle of Trocadero.
Trocadero's Name Around the World
The capture of the fort was such a big deal that it gave its name to a famous area in Paris, France. This area is called Trocadéro and is in the 16th part of the city. In the 1800s, a grand building called the Palais du Trocadéro was built there to celebrate this victory. A few years later, a place in London was also named the London Trocadero to remember the event.
