The history of Muslim rule in Delhi began a long time ago. In 1175 A.D., a ruler named Muhammad Ghori came to India. After taking control of areas like Multan and Punjab, he moved towards Delhi.

The Battles for Delhi
First Battle of Terrain
In 1191 A.D., brave Indian chiefs, led by Prithvi Raj Chauhan, stood up to Muhammad Ghori. They fought a big battle called the First Battle of Terrain. In this battle, Prithvi Raj Chauhan and his forces defeated Muhammad Ghori.
Second Battle of Terrain
Muhammad Ghori did not give up. About a year later, in 1192 A.D., he returned to get his revenge. Another fierce battle took place at Terrain. This time, the Indian forces were defeated, and Prithvi Raj Chauhan was captured and sadly, he died.
This Second Battle of Terrain was a very important moment in history. It set the stage for Muslim rulers to establish their power in Northern India.
The Delhi Sultanate
The period from 1206 A.D. to 1526 A.D. is known as the Delhi Sultanate period. For over 300 years, five different groups of rulers, called dynasties, ruled from Delhi.
Dynasties of the Sultanate
These powerful dynasties shaped Delhi's history:
- Slave dynasty (1206-1290): These rulers were originally military commanders.
- Khilji dynasty (1290-1320): Known for their strong armies and expanding their control.
- Tughlaq dynasty (1320-1413): This dynasty saw both great growth and some challenges.
- Sayyid dynasty (1414-1451): A shorter period of rule, following a time of change.
- Lodhi dynasty (1451-1526): The last dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate before a new empire began.
