Islamic Republic facts for kids
An Islamic Republic is a type of government used by several countries. In these nations, Islam is usually the official state religion. Their laws are based on the rules of Sharia, which is Islamic law. This means that any new laws made by the government cannot go against Sharia.
Countries Called Islamic Republics
Many countries use the name "Islamic Republic," but their governments and laws can be quite different. Here are some examples:
- Iran became an Islamic Republic after its leader, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was overthrown in 1979.
- Pakistan has been an Islamic Republic since its constitution was written in 1956. Pakistan was created in 1947 to be a homeland for Muslims living in what was then British India.
- Afghanistan adopted the name Islamic Republic after the Taliban government was removed in 2001.
- Mauritania has been an Islamic Republic since 1958.
- Sudan is also an Islamic Republic.
- Comoros is known as the Federal Islamic Republic.
- The Gambia was an Islamic Republic from December 2015 for a short period.
Even though these countries share a similar name, their political systems and how they apply Islamic principles can vary a lot.
