Ismael Saz Campos (born 1952) is a Spanish historian. He is an expert on an important period in Spain's past, including the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the long rule of Francisco Franco. He works as a professor at the University of Valencia.

Historians like Ismael Saz help us understand how past events shaped the world we live in today. He has spent his career studying different political ideas and groups in 20th-century Spain.

Early Life and Education

Ismael Saz was born in Valencia, a large city on the coast of Spain, in 1952. He was always interested in history and decided to study it at a high level.

He attended the University of Valencia, where he also earned his PhD in 1986. A PhD, or doctorate, is the highest degree a person can get from a university. For his final project, he wrote about the relationship between Spain and Italy just before the Spanish Civil War.

Career as a Historian

After finishing his studies, Saz began working at the University of Valencia in 1981. He became a full professor of Contemporary History in 2002. As a professor, he teaches students and writes books and articles about his research.

His work helps explain very complex topics in a clear way. He has written about different political movements and how they competed for power in Spain.

What Ismael Saz Studies

Professor Saz focuses on a few key areas of Spanish history.

Francoist Spain

A major part of his work is on Francoist Spain. This is the period from 1939 to 1975 when Spain was ruled by a dictator named Francisco Franco. Saz describes this government as a "fascistised dictatorship." This means it was a dictatorship that used many ideas from fascism, a political system where the state has total control.

Falangism

Saz is a leading expert on Falangism. This was a political movement in Spain that was a key part of Franco's government, especially in its early years. The Falange was the only legal political party for a long time. Saz studies its ideas and its influence on the country.

Competing Ideas

In his books, Saz explains that even within Franco's government, different groups had different ideas. He writes about the struggle between two main groups:

  • Falangists: They were inspired by fascist movements in other parts of Europe.
  • National-Catholics: This group wanted Spain's government and society to be based on traditional Catholic religious values.

Saz's research shows how these two groups competed to shape Spain's future during the Franco years.
