Ancient History of Ispaster
The first signs of people living in Ispaster were found in two caves: Kobeaga II and Kobeaga I. These discoveries help us understand how people lived long ago.
Early Fishermen in Kobeaga II
Around 3500 BCE, which is about 5,500 years ago, a small group of people lived near the sea in the Kobeaga II cave. They were from the Mesolithic period, also known as the Middle Stone Age. These early settlers were very good at fishing, especially for shellfish.
Ancient Burials in Kobeaga I
The Kobeaga I cave is located close to the first one. It was used as a place for burials during the Bronze Age. This shows that people continued to live in and use the area for a very long time.
Other Ancient Sites
There are other ancient sites in Ispaster that haven't been fully explored yet. These include Otoyo'ko Jentilkoba, Jentilkoba de Iparretxe, and Urtiaga. The first written records mentioning Ispaster as a municipality date back to the year 1334. This was in an order from Alfonso XI, a king of Castile.
Ispaster's Development
Ispaster is built on a coastal hill. The area has both low, sandy parts and tall cliffs. The earliest human settlements were in caves, where people lived by fishing and gathering food during the Mesolithic period. Other caves were used as burial sites starting from the Neolithic period.
Building Boom in the Early Modern Period
At the beginning of the early modern period, Ispaster saw a lot of new buildings being constructed. This made the municipality one of the best-equipped in Biscay for its Gothic and Renaissance style buildings.
Local Events
Ispaster is known for hosting the Grand Prix Ayuntamiento de Ispaster. This is a special event that takes place in the municipality.
