What Was Atatürk Airport?
Atatürk Airport was named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He was the founder of the Republic of Turkey. The airport started as an airfield in 1912. It officially became an airport in 1953. It served as Istanbul's main airport for a long time.
Airport Terminals
The airport had three main buildings called terminals.
- Terminal 1 was for flights going to other countries.
- Terminal 2 was for flights staying within Turkey.
- Terminal 3 was used for cargo, which means carrying goods and packages.
Runways for Planes
An airport needs runways for planes to take off and land. Atatürk Airport had three runways. Two of them were about 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) long. The third runway was about 2,580 meters (8,465 feet) long. These long runways allowed many large planes to use the airport safely.
Getting Around Istanbul
