Club Career: Marcano's Football Journey
Starting Out at Racing
Iván Marcano was born in Santander, Spain. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of his hometown club, Racing de Santander. He made his first appearance for the main team on September 30, 2007. This happened during an away game against UD Almería.
He had to leave the game early due to an injury and couldn't play for three months. For the 2008–09 season, Iván officially joined Racing's first team. He scored his first goal in La Liga, Spain's top league, in his fifth match. He played regularly that season, often as a left-back.
Time at Villarreal
In July 2009, Marcano signed a six-year contract with Villarreal CF. He was a key player at the start of his first season. However, after some less strong performances, he played less often. His only goal for Villarreal was on May 4, 2010.
For the 2010–11 season, Iván was loaned to Getafe CF. He played regularly there because other defenders were injured. He scored one goal for Getafe on October 24, 2010. In another game, he was sent off (given a red card) for a foul.
Adventures in Greece and Russia
After playing one season with Olympiacos F.C. in Greece, Marcano moved to FC Rubin Kazan in Russia. This move happened on June 2, 2012. He joined Olympiacos again on loan in 2014.
In Greece, he helped Olympiacos win both the league and the cup in the double season. He made his debut for Rubin Kazan on July 14 in the Russian Super Cup. His team won 2–0. He also played in the UEFA Europa League, where Rubin Kazan reached the quarter-finals. He scored a goal against Chelsea F.C. in that competition.
Success with Porto
On August 11, 2014, Marcano signed a four-year contract with FC Porto in Portugal. He joined as a replacement for another player who moved to Manchester City. He was the sixth Spanish player to join Porto after their new manager, Julen Lopetegui, arrived.
In April 2015, Marcano was sent off during a UEFA Champions League match against FC Bayern Munich. Porto lost that game, even though they had won the first match. In his third season with Porto, he scored four goals in the league.
On November 6, 2016, Marcano was the team captain for the first time as a starter. This was in a home game against S.L. Benfica. He scored his first Champions League goal on October 17, 2017. He also scored a career-high five goals in the league during the 2017–18 season. That season, Porto won the Primeira Liga championship after five years.
Short Spell at Roma
On May 31, 2018, Marcano moved to AS Roma in Italy. He signed a three-year deal with the club. He made his league debut on August 31, playing the first half of a game against AC Milan.
During his time at Roma, Marcano played in only 13 matches. Other defenders played more often than him. He scored his only goal for Roma in the Italian Cup on January 14, 2019.
Back Home at Porto
Marcano returned to FC Porto on July 11, 2019. He was given his old jersey number 5 and signed a new four-year contract. In his first season back, he scored five goals and helped Porto win another domestic league title.
He spent much of the 2020–21 season out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. He made a comeback in February, playing for Porto's reserve team. However, he was injured again with a muscle problem.
After a foot operation in November 2021, Marcano returned to play in the 2022 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira on July 30, 2022. On January 28, 2023, he scored a goal in the final of the Taça da Liga, helping Porto win 2–0 against Sporting CP.
On April 26, 2023, Marcano scored with a header in a game against F.C. Famalicão. This goal made him Porto's all-time top scorer from a defensive position, with 27 goals. On September 15, he suffered another serious knee injury and was out of action for several months.
Playing for Spain
Marcano was part of the Spanish under-21 squad for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He played in one game, a 2–0 win against Finland. Spain did not advance past the group stage in that tournament.
