Club Career
Starting with Racing
Iván Marcano was born in Santander, Spain. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of his hometown club, Racing de Santander. He first played for the main team on September 30, 2007. This happened because some other players were injured. However, he also got injured in that game and couldn't play for three months.
For the 2008–09 season, Marcano officially joined the first team. He scored his first goal in the top Spanish league, La Liga, in his fifth game. He played regularly that season, often as a left-back, which is another defensive position.
Time at Villarreal
In July 2009, Marcano signed a six-year contract with Villarreal CF. He was a regular player for the first part of his first season there. But after some games where he didn't play his best, he started playing less. A younger player, Mateo Musacchio, took his spot in defense.
In 2010, Marcano was loaned to Getafe CF. He played often there because other defenders were injured. He scored one goal for Getafe. In one game against his old club Racing, he was sent off (given a red card) for a foul.
Playing in Greece and Russia
After playing for Olympiacos F.C. in Greece for one season, Marcano moved to FC Rubin Kazan in Russia in June 2012. He helped Olympiacos win both the league and the cup in Greece.
In Russia, he made his debut in the Super Cup, which his team won 2–0. He also played in the UEFA Europa League, a big European competition. His team reached the quarter-finals. He even scored a goal against Chelsea in a game they won 3–2, but Chelsea still won overall. In 2014, he went back to Olympiacos on loan for a short time.
Success at Porto
On August 11, 2014, Marcano signed a four-year contract with FC Porto in Portugal. He joined Porto after their previous defender, Eliaquim Mangala, moved to another club. Marcano was the sixth Spanish player to join Porto after their new coach, Julen Lopetegui, took over.
In April 2015, Marcano was sent off in a UEFA Champions League game against FC Bayern Munich. Porto lost that game and was knocked out of the tournament. In his third season at Porto, he scored four goals in the league.
On November 6, 2016, Marcano was the team captain for the first time from the start of a game. He scored his first Champions League goal in October 2017. In the 2017–18 season, he scored a career-high five goals in the league. That season, Porto won the Primeira Liga championship, which was a big achievement after five years.
Short Spell in Italy
On May 31, 2018, Marcano moved to Italy to play for AS Roma in Serie A. He signed a three-year deal. He played his first league game on August 31.
During his time at Roma, Marcano played in only 13 games. Other defenders played more often than him. He scored his only goal for Roma in a cup game in January 2019.
Back to Porto
Marcano returned to FC Porto on July 11, 2019. He signed another four-year contract. In his first season back, he scored five goals and helped Porto win another league title.
In the 2020–21 season, Marcano spent most of his time recovering from a serious knee injury (an anterior cruciate ligament injury). He tried to come back in February, playing for Porto's reserve team. But after two games, he got another muscle injury.
After having foot surgery in November 2021, Marcano didn't play again until July 30, 2022. He played in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, which Porto won 3–0. In January 2023, he scored a goal in the final of the Taça da Liga, helping Porto win 2–0.
On April 26, 2023, Marcano scored a goal with his head in a cup game. This goal helped Porto win 2–1. With this goal, he became Porto's highest-scoring defender ever, with 27 goals. On September 15, 2023, he suffered another serious knee injury in a league game. This injury kept him out of play for 17 months.
