Eliaquim Hans Mangala, born on February 13, 1991, is a French professional football player. He plays as a centre-back (a defender in the middle) for a team called Estoril in Portugal.
Eliaquim was born in France but moved to Belgium when he was a child. He started his football career there with Standard Liège. In 2011, he moved to Porto and helped them win the Portuguese league title twice in a row.
In 2014, he joined Manchester City in England. He played 79 matches for them and was part of the team that won the Premier League in the 2017–18 season. During his time at Manchester City, he also played on loan for Valencia and Everton. Later, in 2019, he joined Valencia permanently.
Mangala also played for the French national team. His first game for France was on June 6, 2013, against Uruguay. He was chosen to be in France's squads for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016. He even played as a substitute in the Euro 2016 tournament.

Club Career
Starting Out in Belgium
Eliaquim Mangala was born in a suburb of Paris, France. His parents were from Congo. When he was five years old, he moved to a city in Belgium called Namur. He started playing football at a local club, Athletic Club Lustin.
He then moved to CS Wépionnais and later joined the biggest club in Namur, UR Namur. At UR Namur, Mangala played as a striker (a player who tries to score goals). His good performances caught the eye of Standard Liège, a bigger club. In 2007, he signed a youth contract with them.
Playing for Standard Liège
When Mangala joined Standard Liège, he changed positions. First, he played as a left back (a defender on the left side). Then, in January 2008, he moved to central defence, which is where he plays now. Even though he was only 17, he often trained with the club's older teams.
In the 2008–09 season, Mangala got to train with the first team. On October 23, 2008, he signed his first professional contract. He made his professional debut on November 9, coming on as a substitute in a 3–1 win. He played 11 league games that season as Standard Liège won the league title. He also played in some UEFA Cup matches.
For the 2009–10 season, Mangala became a regular starter. He scored his first professional goal on September 12, 2009, in a 3–0 league win. Four days later, he scored another goal against the English club Arsenal in a UEFA Champions League game. Standard Liège went up 2–0 early on, but they ended up losing the match 3–2.
In his last league game for Standard, Mangala scored a goal that gave his team a 1–0 lead. In his final game for the club on May 21, 2011, he scored the first goal in a 2–0 win in the Belgian Cup final. This win ended an 18-year wait for the club to win a cup!
Moving to Porto

On August 16, 2011, Mangala joined Porto, a big club in Portugal that had just won the Europa League. He spent his first season mostly as a substitute. In the 2012–13 season, he became a regular starter as a centre-back. He scored four goals in the league that season.
Mangala helped Porto win the league title in 2013 without losing a single game. They won the league by just one point over their rivals, Benfica. In January 2014, Manchester City tried to sign Mangala, but Porto wanted a very high price.
On February 23, 2014, Mangala was sent off (given a red card) in a game against Estoril. Porto lost that game 1–0. A few days later, in a Europa League match, Mangala scored two goals with his head. Porto drew 3–3 and moved on to the next round. He scored another header in the quarter-finals against Sevilla, but Porto was knocked out of the competition.
Time at Manchester City

On August 11, 2014, Mangala signed a five-year contract with the English club Manchester City. The transfer fee was reported to be around £31.8 million. He joined his former Porto teammate, Fernando, who had also moved to City earlier that summer.
Mangala played his first game for City on September 21, 2014, in a 1–1 draw against Chelsea. His performance was described as "colossal" by BBC Sport. In his next game, he scored an own goal and gave away a penalty, which caused City to lose a 2–0 lead against Hull City. However, City still won the match 4–2. His manager, Manuel Pellegrini, continued to trust him. On November 30, Mangala was sent off with two yellow cards in a 3–0 win against Southampton.
Loan to Valencia
On August 31, 2016, Mangala joined the Spanish club Valencia on loan for a season. He played his first game for Valencia on September 11. On February 28, 2017, he scored his first goal for them in a win against Leganés. He also scored against FC Barcelona on March 19, but he was sent off in that game.
Loan to Everton
Mangala joined Everton, another Premier League club, on loan on January 31, 2018. He played his first game against Arsenal. However, in his second game, he got a knee injury and had to leave the field. He needed surgery and couldn't play for the rest of the season. Even though he was injured, he was still eligible for a Premier League winner's medal because he had played nine league games for Manchester City earlier that season.
Return to Valencia
On August 12, 2019, Mangala went back to Valencia permanently. He signed a two-year contract after leaving Manchester City for free. He and some of his teammates tested positive for the COVID-19 virus during the pandemic.
Playing for Saint-Étienne
On January 20, 2022, Mangala signed a six-month contract with Saint-Étienne in France. He played 14 league matches and scored a goal in a 2–1 loss to Reims. He was suspended three times for getting too many yellow cards. He missed the first leg of a playoff game but returned for the second leg, which his team lost in a penalty shootout.
Joining Estoril
After being without a club for over a year, Mangala returned to Portugal on August 7, 2023. He joined Primeira Liga club Estoril on a one-year deal after trying out with the team.
International Career
Because Eliaquim Mangala grew up in Belgium, he didn't play for France's youth football teams at first. In 2008, Belgium asked him to join their under-18 national team, but he couldn't because he didn't have a passport at the time.
After he started playing well for Standard Liège, the French Football Federation became interested. On November 5, 2009, Mangala was chosen for the France under-21 team for the first time. He made his debut for the under-21 team in a friendly match against Tunisia.
Mangala made his debut for the France senior team on June 6, 2013, in a 1–0 loss to Uruguay. He was part of France's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but he didn't play in any games. France reached the quarter-finals in that tournament.
Mangala was also in France's squad for UEFA Euro 2016, which was held in France. France finished as runners-up in that tournament. He played one game on July 3, coming on as a substitute in a 5–2 win against Iceland in the quarter-finals.
