Ivan L. R. Lemelle (born June 29, 1950) is a senior United States district judge. He works for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. This means he is a very experienced judge in a federal court.

Early Life and Education
Ivan Lemelle was born in Opelousas, Louisiana, on June 29, 1950. He went to Xavier University of Louisiana and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. After that, he studied law at Loyola University New Orleans School of Law. He received his law degree in 1974. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a law clerk. This means he helped a judge with their legal research and paperwork.
Legal Career and Public Service
After finishing law school, Lemelle worked in different legal roles.
- From 1974 to 1977, he was an assistant district attorney in Orleans Parish.
- He also worked in private practice in New Orleans from 1977 to 1981. This means he had his own law business.
- He was an assistant city attorney for New Orleans from 1977 to 1978.
- From 1980 to 1984, he served as an assistant state attorney general for Louisiana.
Becoming a Federal Judge
Ivan Lemelle became a United States magistrate judge in 1984. He held this important position for 14 years, until 1998.
In 1997, President Bill Clinton chose Lemelle to be a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The United States Senate approved his nomination in 1998. He officially became a judge on April 7, 1998. In 2015, he became a senior status judge. This means he can still hear cases but with a reduced workload.
Important Cases and Decisions
As a federal judge, Ivan Lemelle has overseen many important cases.
- In 2009, he handled a case involving organized illegal activities. He set the trial date for January 25, 2010.
- He also heard a case about dishonest dealings with real estate. The person involved had to pay back a large amount of money. They also spent time in prison.
- In 2009, Judge Lemelle visited several schools in Tangipahoa Parish. He was looking into an old agreement about school fairness. His decision would affect how these schools operate.
Legacy and Recognition
In November 2020, there was a proposal to rename a street in New Orleans after Judge Lemelle. This street, Capdevielle Street, was named after a former mayor. Judge Lemelle was the only living person considered for this special honor. The decision was still being discussed in early 2021.
Personal Life
Ivan Lemelle is a Catholic. He grew up attending Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas. This church is known as the largest Black Catholic church in the United States.
