Early Life and Education

Ivan Reitman was born on October 27, 1946, in a town called Komárno in Czechoslovakia. His parents, Klara and Ladislav Reitman, were Jewish. His mother survived a very difficult time during World War II, and his father was a brave resistance fighter. When Ivan was four years old, his family moved to Canada as refugees.

He went to Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto. Later, he studied at McMaster University and earned a degree in music in 1969. While at university, he started making short films, which helped him learn about filmmaking.

Ivan Reitman's first job in the film industry was producing for a new TV station in Toronto called CITY-TV. Even though his time there was short, it was an important start.

His big break came when he produced the hit comedy movie National Lampoon's Animal House in 1978. After that, he directed his first major film, Meatballs, in 1979. These movies helped him become a well-known name in Hollywood.

In 1998, he started a new film production company called The Montecito Picture Company. In 2007, Ivan Reitman was honored by being added to Canada's Walk of Fame.
