Playing for Football Clubs
Ivan Turina started his professional football journey with his childhood club, Dinamo Zagreb, in 1998. Before becoming a regular player for them in 2003, he spent some time playing for other teams on loan. These teams included Croatia Sesvete, Kamen Ingrad, and Osijek.
Dinamo Zagreb Success
During the 2005–06 season, Ivan was the main goalkeeper for Dinamo Zagreb. That year, his team won their first league title in two years, which was a big achievement! He continued to play regularly at the start of the next season. However, after Dinamo Zagreb was knocked out of the UEFA Cup, Ivan was replaced by another goalkeeper.
Moving to Other European Teams
In 2007, Ivan decided to join a Greek club called Skoda Xanthi. He played there for one season before moving to Lech Poznań, a team in Poland.
Ivan made his first league appearance for Lech Poznań on October 31, 2008. He played 12 league games and six games in the UEFA Cup that season. His team also won the Polish Cup, a major tournament, that year! In September 2009, Ivan left Lech Poznań and began training again with Dinamo Zagreb.
Return to Dinamo Zagreb
On January 27, 2010, Dinamo Zagreb signed Ivan Turina again. He became the second-choice goalkeeper. He played one game during this time, coming on as a substitute in a match against Varaždin.
Time in Sweden with AIK
Later in 2010, Ivan joined the Swedish club AIK. He made his first appearance for them on July 17, 2010. He quickly became a very important player for AIK. By the time he passed away, he had played 65 league games for the club.
Playing for His Country
Ivan Turina also had the honor of playing for the Croatian national football team. In 2006, he was part of the team that played in the Carlsberg Cup in Hong Kong. On February 1, 2006, he played his only full international game for Croatia. He came on as a substitute in a match where Croatia won 4–0 against the Hong Kong team.
Ivan Turina's Legacy
Sadly, Ivan Turina passed away on May 2, 2013, in his apartment in Solna, Sweden. An investigation later showed that his death was caused by a heart condition he was born with. He left behind his wife and two young twin daughters, and his wife was also expecting another child.
Tributes and Charity Game
To honor Ivan, a special charity football game was played on May 13, 2013. It was between AIK, his last club, and Dinamo Zagreb, his first club. The game was held at Friends Arena, and all the money raised went to Ivan's family.
Each half of the game was 27 minutes long. This was a special tribute because 27 was Ivan's shirt number at AIK. Many fans came to watch, and Ivan's family received a lot of money from the event, which helped them greatly.
Fan Tradition
Even today, AIK fans remember Ivan Turina in a special way. In every game played by the AIK men's football team, the fans become quiet during the 27th minute. Then, for the next minute, they chant his name. This tradition has continued in every single game since Ivan's passing, showing how much he is still loved and remembered by the fans.
