Ivy is a small community in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially governed as one.

As of the 2020 Census, about 917 people live in Ivy. It's located on U.S. Route 250, just west of the city of Charlottesville.

History of Ivy

The area where Ivy is located has a long history. A stream called Ivy Creek flows through this part of western Albemarle County. This creek was mentioned in old land records as far back as the 1750s.

The village we know as Ivy today had different names in the past.

  • From 1826 to 1851, it was called Woodville. This name came from the Wood family, who were important in the local area.
  • When the railroad arrived in 1851, the train stop here was named Woodville Depot.
  • By 1859, the name changed again to Ivy Depot, likely because of Ivy Creek.
  • Finally, in the 1950s, the name was shortened to just Ivy.
