Discovering Izurtza's History
Just like many old Basque towns, nobody knows exactly when Izurtza was first founded. Local stories say that the Etxaburu tower, which stands on a hill above the town, was built a very long time ago. Some tales even suggest it was built by order of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius!
The tower was later destroyed by Henry IV of Castile. But don't worry, it was rebuilt in the 16th century by a person named Sancho López de Ibargüen. Around the same time, the town's church, called San Nicolás Obispo, was also built. Izurtza was an important part of the Durango region. It had a voice and a vote in the local meetings called the Juntas of Guerendiaga.
Geography of Izurtza
Where is Izurtza Located?
Izurtza is in the southeastern part of the Biscay province in northern Spain. It's one of the smallest towns in the province. To the north and west, it borders Durango. To the south, it's next to Mañaria, and to the east, it borders Abadiño.
The town sits between two mountains, Mugarra and Untxillaitz. The Mañaria River flows right through it. A main road, the BI-623, goes through Izurtza from north to south. This road connects Durango with Vitoria-Gasteiz. Izurtza has a small town center around this road. You can also see many traditional farming houses scattered on the hillsides.
Rivers and Water in Izurtza
Izurtza is in a valley. This valley was formed by the Mañaria River. This river starts in the mountains and later joins a bigger river called the Ibaizabal river.
Izurtza's Economy
For a long time, the main way people in Izurtza made a living was through farming. They worked on farms and with animals. However, since the 1900s, industries have grown a lot. Because of this, farming is no longer the main economic activity in Izurtza.
Getting Around Izurtza
Transportation in Izurtza mainly relies on roads. The BI-623 road is very important. It connects Izurtza to Durango, which is the main town of the Durangaldea region. Durango is only about 1.5 kilometers away!
Going south on the same road, you can reach Mañaria and Urkiola. From there, you can travel to places like Otxandio, Dima, and even the province of Álava. In Durango, the BI-623 road connects to bigger roads like the National Road N-634 and the AP-8 highway. These highways can take you to major cities like Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastián.
