Moving to Europe
After playing well in the 1986 World Cup, Júlio César moved to Europe in 1986. He joined a French club, Stade Brestois, for one season. The next year, he moved to Montpellier, where he stayed for three seasons. During his last season there, he helped the team win the Coupe de France, which is a major French cup competition.
Time at Juventus
In 1990, Júlio César moved to Italy to play for the famous club Juventus. He joined them to help make their defense stronger. He played his first game in Italy's top league, Serie A, on September 9, 1990. Even though he played well, his time at Juventus wasn't super successful in terms of winning many trophies. His biggest win with Juventus was the UEFA Cup in 1993. He played 125 games for Juventus and scored six goals.
Success with Borussia Dortmund
In 1994, Júlio César moved to Germany to play for Borussia Dortmund. This was a very successful period for him! In his first two seasons, he helped the team win the Bundesliga (Germany's top league) twice in a row. They also won the DFL-Supercup.
The biggest win came in 1997 when Borussia Dortmund won the UEFA Champions League, which is Europe's most important club competition. Even though he was injured and missed the final, he was a key part of the team. Later that year, they also won the Intercontinental Cup. He stayed with Borussia Dortmund until 1999.
Later Career
During his time at Borussia Dortmund, he also played on loan for other clubs. In 1998, he went to Botafogo in Brazil. In 1999, he played for Panathinaikos in Greece. Later in 1999, he joined Werder Bremen in Germany for one season. He then returned to Brazil in 2001 to play for Rio Branco, where he eventually retired from football.
Playing for Brazil
Júlio César played 13 official matches for the Brazilian national team. His first game was on April 8, 1986, against East Germany.
World Cup and Copa América
He played for Brazil in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. He played so well that he was chosen as the Best Central Defender and was part of the tournament's "Team of the Tournament."
However, he had a tough moment in the quarter-final match against France. The game went to a penalty shootout, and Júlio César missed his penalty kick. France ended up winning the match. The next year, in 1987, he also represented Brazil in the 1987 Copa América tournament.
How He Played
Júlio César is remembered as one of Brazil's best centre-backs. He was known for being very strong, fast, and good at heading the ball. He was also great at knowing where to be on the field, tackling opponents, and understanding the game.
He was a quick and powerful defender who could also play as a sweeper. A sweeper plays behind the main defenders and helps start attacks. Júlio César was good with the ball at his feet and had good vision for passing. He was also a strong shooter from far away and could take accurate set-pieces and penalty kicks, which made him a threat to score goals too.
