J C Hartman (born April 15, 1934) is an American former professional baseball player. He was a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Houston Colt .45s in 1962 and 1963. Before joining MLB, he also played in the Negro leagues for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1955.
J C Hartman had two cool nicknames: "Cool" and "The Spider." He was called "The Spider" because his arms and legs looked very long when he chased after baseballs. He was 6 feet tall and weighed 175 pounds. Hartman was born in Cottonton, Alabama, and he threw and batted right-handed.

Playing Baseball: J C Hartman's Career
J C Hartman started his professional baseball journey in 1959. He played in the minor leagues for the Chicago Cubs' team. In 1961, he played for the Houston Buffs. The next year, he joined the Houston Colt .45s. This team was new to the National League.
Major League Debut: Houston Colt .45s
Hartman joined the Colt .45s in the middle of the 1962 season. He played as a backup shortstop to Bob Lillis. He started 42 games that year and had a batting average of .223. In 1963, he started the season with Houston. He played in 39 games, starting 21 of them as shortstop. After that, he went back to playing in the minor leagues until 1967.

During his time in the major leagues, J C Hartman got 44 hits. Six of these hits were doubles. He also helped his team score 8 runs batted in.
Life After Baseball: Serving the Community
After his baseball career, J C Hartman continued to serve his community. In 1973, he became the very first African American supervisor for the Houston Police Department. This was a big achievement!
Awards and Recognition: A Lifetime of Service
J C Hartman has received many honors for his service. The Houston Police Department recently gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award. Before playing baseball, Hartman was a paratrooper in the United States Army. He earned several awards there, including a U.S. Army Good Conduct Award and a U.S. Army Parachutist Badge. He also received an Honorable Discharge from the Army.
