J C Hartman (born April 15, 1934) is an American former professional player. He was a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in 90 games for the Houston Colt .45s in 1962 and 1963. Before that, he played in the Negro leagues for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1955.

J C Hartman's Baseball Journey

J C Hartman was born in Cottonton, Alabama. He was known by two cool nicknames: "Cool" and "The Spider." He got the nickname "The Spider" because his arms and legs seemed to stretch very far. This helped him reach ground balls when he played shortstop. He was 6 feet tall and weighed 175 pounds. He threw and batted with his right hand.

Starting in Baseball

Hartman's baseball career began in 1959. He started in the minor leagues with the Chicago Cubs' team system. He played for the Triple-A Houston Buffs in 1961. After that, the new expansion team, the Houston Colt .45s, chose him. They were getting ready for their first season in the National League.

Playing in the Big Leagues

In the middle of the 1962 season, J C Hartman joined the Houston Colt .45s. He was a backup shortstop for the team. He started in 42 games that year. He had a batting average of .223. He stayed with the team for the start of the 1963 season. He played in 39 games, starting 21 of them. After that, he went back to playing in the minor leagues until 1967.

During his time in the big leagues, Hartman made 44 hits. These included six doubles. He also had eight runs batted in (RBIs).

Life After Baseball

After his baseball career, J C Hartman did something very important. In 1973, he became the first African American supervisor for the Houston Police Department. This was a big achievement! The Houston Police Department recently gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Before playing baseball, Hartman served in the United States Army. He was a paratrooper, which means he jumped out of airplanes. He received several awards from the Army. These include a Good Conduct Award and a Parachutist Badge. He also received an Honorable Discharge.
