At 16, Fitzpatrick joined the CASCAR Super Series. This series is now known as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. In 2004, he finished 11th overall. He was also second in the Rookie of the Year standings. The next year, at 17, he got his first win. He also had three top-five finishes and five top-10 finishes. When he was 18, he became the youngest Canadian Tire Series National Champion. He achieved this with one win, five podium finishes, and two pole awards.
Professional Racing Career
NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Races
After NASCAR took over CASCAR, J. R. continued to race his father's No. 84 Chevrolet. In 2007, he won two races in the Canadian Tire Series. He also had four top-five finishes and seven top-10 finishes. He earned three pole awards that year. His car was sponsored by Milwaukee Tools.
In 2008, he won one race at Mosport. He also had five top-five finishes and six top-10 finishes. He earned two pole awards. In 2009, he raced part-time in the No. 84 car. He won at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and led the most laps.
For 2010, he raced full-time with Schick as his sponsor. He won his first race of the season at Mosport on June 13. He also won the race in Edmonton. He and D. J. Kennington traded the points lead many times. Fitzpatrick finished second in the points standings that year. He raced again in 2011 and finished third in points.
In 2012, he returned to the Canadian Tire Series. He won the first race of the season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. He also won the big race in Montreal. He finished second in the points standings that year.
Nationwide Series Races
Fitzpatrick made his first big NASCAR start in the Busch Series. This was at the Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200 in Mexico City. He finished 33rd in that race. He also raced in Montreal on August 4, 2007. He finished 43rd there. This was right after he won the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race at the same track. He said he was "very tired" after racing both events.
In 2009, he drove the famous No. 4 KHI Chevy. He raced at two road courses. He finished 19th at Watkins Glen. In Montreal, he was on track for a top 10 finish. However, he went off course and stalled his car. This led to a poor finish.
In 2010, it was announced that J. R. would drive for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 7 team. He raced in all three road course events. He got his first Nationwide top 10 finish at Road America, coming in 7th. He also finished 7th in Montreal. Fitzpatrick later raced for Baker Curb Racing at Daytona International Speedway. His car was sponsored by Schick. He finished 42nd in that race. He competed in six more races that year for Go Canada Racing.
Camping World Truck Series Races
On February 13, 2009, Fitzpatrick finished fourth in his No. 7 Mammoet Chevrolet Silverado. This was at the NextEra Energy Resources 250 race. It was his third race in the series. He led 17 laps in this event. After the Martinsville race, his deal with Kevin Buckler's TRG Motorsports ended.
He then drove several races for Kevin Harvick, Inc. and Chase Mattioli in 2009 and 2011. He was supposed to race full-time in 2012. He would drive the No. 60 Chevrolet for Turn One Racing. However, he left the team after only two races.
