Early Life and Musical Beginnings
JHawk grew up in Leimert Park, a lively part of Los Angeles. Music was a big part of his family. His mother was a local singer, and his father played many different instruments. He is also the great-nephew of The Chambers Brothers, a famous band known for their song "Time Has Come Today." JHawk often watched them practice and perform.
When he was 11, JHawk's father gave him his first music software, Hip Hop EJay. This sparked his interest in making beats, and he decided he wanted to become a music producer.
Music Career Journey
Starting Out (2008-Present)
After three years at Daniel Murphy High School, the school closed down. Jeremy, who was already known for recording students in his home studio, had to move for his senior year. He moved in with his father and turned their garage into a music studio in 2008. There, he often recorded his cousin Left Brain, who brought along other future famous artists like Tyler The Creator, Hodgy Beats, and Casey Veggies. JHawk helped record and produce early projects for their group, Odd future, including The Odd Future Tape and The Dena Tape.
In the summer of 2008, JHawk attended Hamilton High School's Academy of Music and Performing Arts. He took classes like Electronic Music and Music History, where he met his friend Syd Tha Kyd. JHawk worked hard to get noticed. He used his Myspace page to send out his beats and connected with rapper YG. Their collaborations quickly gained over 3 million plays online.
Later, JHawk signed a music publishing deal with Arthouse Entertainment, which is now part of BMG Chrysalis. This helped his music reach an even wider audience.
Pioneering the Jerkin' Movement
Inspired by the Hyphy movement from Northern California, JHawk started working with many young artists, including his classmates. Kids at school began dancing to his music in a new style called Jerkin'. Dance crews like the Rangers formed, making videos with JHawk's music. These videos became hugely popular on Myspace and YouTube, getting tens of millions of views.
At 17, JHawk formed an all-female rap group called Pink Dollaz. Within two months, their music had over 5 million streams on Myspace and YouTube, and their songs were played on radio stations like Power 106. Another song he produced, "Tippin'," has over 14 million views on just one YouTube video. The Jerkin' sound and culture became very popular, getting attention from major newspapers like The New York Times and LA Times. Many artists involved in the movement, like New Boyz, The Rej3ctz, Audio Push, and YG, signed deals with big record labels. JHawk felt lucky to be one of the people who started this movement.
The Hit Song "Cat Daddy"
In the spring of 2010, JHawk reconnected with The Rej3ctz. They felt they weren't getting enough recognition for their contributions to the music scene. So, they decided to create something new. In JHawk's home recording studio, they created the song "Cat Daddy." This song became a massive hit and is one of JHawk's most famous productions.
Flight In Progress and 22andlife
JHawk also started "Flight In Progress," a music business venture. It helps independent artists and producers understand how to get their music distributed and streamed in today's changing music industry. He shares this information through YouTube and SoundCloud.
His production company, "22andlife," is a creative space for music projects, videos, streetwear, and events. It's a way for JHawk to explore different creative ideas.
