Jabez Allies (born October 22, 1787 – died January 29, 1856) was an English folklorist and antiquarian. This means he was a person who studied old stories, customs, and beliefs (folklore) and also ancient objects and history (antiquities). He was one of the first people to write about folklore in England.

The Life of Jabez Allies

Jabez was born in 1787 in a place called Lulsley, Worcestershire. His family had lived there for many generations. When he was young, he was very interested in the old remains from Roman and Saxon times in his area. He also loved the simple country life around him.

Jabez first worked as a clerk in London. Later, he became a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer, and worked in London for several years.

Discovering Ancient History

Jabez was very good at finding and understanding old historical things. He became a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London around 1840. This is a group of people who study ancient history. He also presented many of his findings at meetings of the Royal Archaeological Institute.

He helped to understand old Roman sites in his home county of Worcestershire. Other historians had not been able to identify these sites clearly, but Jabez shed new light on them.

Family Life and Later Years

Jabez Allies married Catherine Hartshorne. They had one child, a son named William Hartshorne Allies. After getting married, Jabez left London. He moved to Lower Wick, which is now part of Worcester. There, he was very involved in local events and the history of Worcestershire.

Jabez Allies passed away in 1856 at his home in Cheltenham. He was buried next to his wife in Leckhampton churchyard. His wife had passed away the year before, in 1855.
