Jack D. Shanstrom was a respected judge who dedicated his life to the legal system. He held several important positions, from a local county attorney to a federal judge. His career showed a strong commitment to justice and public service.
Early Life and Education
Jack D. Shanstrom was born in Hewitt, Minnesota. He went to the University of Montana for his college education. There, he earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in 1956 and a Bachelor of Science in 1957.
After his college studies, he continued his education at the University of Montana School of Law. He earned his law degree, a Bachelor of Laws, in 1957. This education prepared him for a long and successful career in law.
Starting a Legal Career
After finishing law school, Shanstrom joined the United States Air Force. He served as a first lieutenant in the JAG Corps from 1957 to 1960. The JAG Corps is the legal branch of the military.
After his military service, he began working as a private lawyer in Livingston, Montana. This was from 1960 to 1964. During this time, he also served as an assistant city attorney for Livingston in 1960. He then became the Park County attorney for Livingston, a role he held from 1960 to 1965.
Becoming a Judge
Jack Shanstrom's journey to becoming a judge began in Montana. He served as a district court judge for Park County, Montana. He held this position for many years, from 1965 to 1982. This experience prepared him for higher judicial roles.
Serving as a Federal Judge
From 1983 to 1990, Shanstrom worked as a United States magistrate judge. This was for the United States District Court for the District of Montana. A magistrate judge helps federal judges with many tasks.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush chose him to be a federal district judge. The United States Senate approved this choice on May 11, 1990. He officially became a judge on May 14, 1990.
Leading the Court
Judge Shanstrom took on an even bigger role in 1996. He became the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Montana. He served as Chief Judge until 2001. The Chief Judge has extra duties, like managing the court.
In 2001, Judge Shanstrom took on a less active role as a senior judge. He continued to be a federal judge but with a reduced workload. He fully retired from hearing cases in 2013. Jack D. Shanstrom passed away on January 13, 2020, at his home in Palm Desert, California. He was 87 years old.
