Jack Frost is a fictional superhero from American comic books. These comics are published by Marvel Comics. He first appeared in 1941. This was during a time fans call the Golden Age of comic books. Back then, Marvel was known as Timely Comics.

Jack Frost's Comic Book Adventures

Early Appearances

Jack Frost first showed up in U.S.A. Comics #1 in August 1941. He was one of the first characters created by Stan Lee. Stan Lee later became a very famous editor and publisher at Marvel. He worked with artist Charles Wojtkoski to create Jack Frost.

Jack Frost looks a lot like the winter spirit from folklore also named Jack Frost. He has icy blue skin and blue shorts. His powers and looks are similar to Iceman. Iceman was another character created by Stan Lee much later, in 1963.

Jack Frost appeared in four issues of U.S.A. Comics. He even met other heroes in a special story in issue #2. This story was called "When U.S.A. Heroes Meet!" In it, Jack Frost teamed up with heroes like Rockman and the Whizzer. They talked about their adventures.

Joining the Liberty Legion

Many years later, in 1975, Marvel started a new comic called The Invaders. This comic brought back popular heroes from the Golden Age. These included Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner.

The writer, Roy Thomas, wanted to create another superhero team. He formed the Liberty Legion. This team included other heroes from the Golden Age, like Jack Frost. Other members were Miss America and the Whizzer.

Roy Thomas chose Jack Frost because he fit a certain type of hero. He wanted a character similar to the Sub-Mariner. Jack Frost's past was a bit of a mystery in his old stories. Roy Thomas decided to keep it that way. There were hints that Jack Frost might even be an alien!

Jack Frost fought with the Liberty Legion in several stories in 1976. They appeared in comics like Marvel Premiere and Marvel Two-in-One. The team returned for more adventures in The Invaders in 1978-1979. After that, they didn't appear for a while.

Later Appearances

Jack Frost came back for one comic issue in April 1991. This was Captain America #384. He then went back into hiding. He made two more appearances in 2009. These were in a series called Avengers/Invaders. This series also looked back at Golden Age heroes.

Jack Frost's Story and Powers

Origin Story

Jack Frost looks like a young man made of ice. He can create and handle very cold temperatures. He can also make large amounts of ice.

His first story hints that he is a mythical creature. He is a lonely figure living in the Arctic. The story says he is "the King of the Cold."

This ice spirit woke up because of a dying gold miner. The miner asked Jack to protect his daughter in New York City. So, Jack traveled to America. There, he decided to fight evil wherever he found it.

Fighting in World War II

During World War II, Jack Frost joined the Liberty Legion. This team of superheroes protected the United States. They fought against enemies from the Axis countries.

The Liberty Legion was first put together by Bucky Barnes. Their mission was to rescue the Invaders. The Invaders had been brainwashed by the Red Skull. With the Legion, Jack Frost fought against heroes like Namor the Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch. He even used an ice umbrella to protect people from danger!

Sacrifice and Return

In a 1991 Captain America comic, we learned what happened to Jack Frost. He had sacrificed himself. He joined with a powerful Arctic "ice-worm" monster. This stopped the monster from hurting innocent people.

Jack Frost was briefly set free during a fight with Captain America. But he chose to go back and join the ice-worm again. Thor, another Marvel hero, thought Jack Frost might be a small child of a Norse mythology Frost giant.

Abilities

Jack Frost can make temperatures drop below freezing. He can use the water in the air to create snow, sleet, and ice. He can make snowstorms with strong winds. He can also shape ice into simple things like balls, bridges, or walls.

He is also super strong and tough. His skin is bluish-white and shines with frost. His skin temperature is always around 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius).

Other Characters Named Jack Frost

In modern Marvel comics, there is another character named Jack Frost. He is a human scientist named Professor Gregor Shapanka. He used technology to create ice. He became a supervillain and fought Iron Man. He later changed his name to Blizzard.
