Football Career Highlights
Jack Peddie was born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Scotland. He started his football journey with a junior club called Benburb. In June 1895, he joined Third Lanark.
Time at Newcastle United
Two years later, in 1897, Jack moved to England to play for Newcastle United. He quickly made an impact, scoring 17 goals in his first 20 league games. In his first season (1898), he helped Newcastle get promoted to the top division of English football, known as the First Division.
He also scored two goals in an exciting FA Cup match against Preston North End, helping Newcastle win 2–1. When Newcastle played their first ever game in the First Division, Jack scored both goals, though they lost 4–2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Later, in November 1898, he scored two more goals in a 3–0 win against Liverpool. Jack was Newcastle's top scorer for four seasons in a row, from 1897–98 to 1900–01. Overall, he scored 79 goals in 136 games for Newcastle.
Playing for Manchester United and Plymouth Argyle
After five seasons with Newcastle, Jack joined Manchester United in June 1902. In his first season there, he was the club's top scorer with 11 league goals.
In May 1903, he moved to Plymouth Argyle. This was a big move as it was Plymouth's first season as a professional club. Jack made history by scoring their first competitive goals in both the Southern League and Western League. He scored 21 goals in 46 games during his year at Plymouth.
He returned to Manchester United in 1904. He was named club captain and was once again the team's top goalscorer, with 17 goals in 32 league games. In the 1904–05 season, he scored 20 goals in all competitions. This helped Manchester United finish second and get promoted back to the First Division for the first time since 1894. Jack played a total of 121 games for Manchester United across his two spells, scoring 58 goals.
Final Years in Football
In January 1907, Jack moved back to Scotland to play for Heart of Midlothian, also known as Hearts. He played as an inside right and centre forward. In the Scottish Cup, he scored a goal against Airdrieonians in a 2–0 win.
Unfortunately, a knee injury kept bothering him and eventually ended his career. He played only 23 first-team matches in his last two seasons, scoring five goals. In 1908, he decided to move to Canada. Later, he moved to the United States and settled in Detroit. Jack Peddie passed away in 1928 when he was 52 years old.
