Jackson Square Historic District is a special area in downtown San Francisco, California. It's famous for its old commercial buildings. These buildings show off beautiful styles like classical revival and Italianate architecture.
This historic district was created way back when San Francisco was first growing. It became important during the 1849 California Gold Rush. On November 18, 1971, Jackson Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as a place with important history.
What is Jackson Square?
Jackson Square Historic District has clear boundaries. It is bordered by Broadway to the north. To the south, you'll find Washington Street. Columbus Avenue is on its west side. Sansome Street forms its eastern edge. Jackson Street runs right through the middle of this historic area.
Different groups sometimes describe Jackson Square in different ways. The San Francisco Association of Realtors says it's part of the Financial District/Barbary Coast neighborhood. However, the city's Office of Neighborhood Services considers it part of the North Beach neighborhood.
A Glimpse into History
Jackson Square is located in what used to be the northeastern part of an area called the Barbary Coast. This area was a lively and busy part of early San Francisco. It played a big role in the city's growth during the Gold Rush era.
