Early Life and Training
Jacob Ennis was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1728. He was baptized on February 29th of that year. His parents were James and Margaret Ennis.
He started his art training at a young age. He went to the Dublin Society school of drawing. There, he learned from a teacher named Robert West. Jacob was a talented student and won awards in 1747, 1748, and 1750.
He passed away in 1770 in County Wicklow, after falling from his horse.
His Artistic Journey
Studying in Italy
With help from a supporter named Arthur Jones Nevill, Jacob Ennis traveled to Italy to continue his art studies. He arrived in Rome in early 1754. In Rome, he lived with other artists, James Forrester and Robert Crone.
He studied at art academies like Accademia del Nudo. His teachers included famous artists Anton Raphael Mengs and Pompeo Batoni. He also visited Florence to see more art. Jacob won several prizes for his paintings and drawings while in Italy. His award-winning drawings are still kept in an archive in Rome today. While there, he practiced drawing from real people and old statues. On his way back to Ireland, he stopped in Gibraltar and painted some portraits there.
Painting and Teaching in Dublin
After returning to Dublin, Jacob Ennis began painting historical scenes and portraits. He created four special paintings for a ceiling in Arthur Jones Nevill's home. Three of these paintings are now part of the National Gallery of Ireland collection.
In 1763, Jacob Ennis took over from Robert West as the master of the figure drawing school in Dublin. This meant he was in charge of teaching students how to draw people. He showed his art every year at exhibitions between 1765 and 1770. The Dublin Society gave him an award in 1768 for the best original history painting. He won another award in 1770 with artist Henry Tresham.
Jacob Ennis received his last payment as a drawing master on August 9, 1770. After he died, Robert West returned to teach at the school.
