Jacobus is a small town, also called a borough, in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located about 6 miles south of York City. In 2020, about 1,829 people lived there.

History of Jacobus

Jacobus was first settled in 1837. It was originally known as "New Paradise." However, this name caused problems. Mail often got mixed up with another town called Paradise in Lancaster County.

How Jacobus Got Its Name

To fix the mail mix-up, the United States Post Office Department asked the local postmaster, Jacob Geiselman, to change the name of the post office. Jacob couldn't think of a new name. So, mail for his town was often sent to him labeled "Jacob-US Mail." This was later shortened to "Jacob-US." Because of this, the post office was renamed Jacobus, and the town soon followed. In 1929, Jacobus officially became a borough under Pennsylvania law.
