About Jacques Houplain
Early Life and Art School
Jacques Houplain was born in a French town called Luneray. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Paris, a famous city in France. He went to a well-known art school called the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
During World War II, France was occupied by German forces. Jacques had to hide for three years during this time. After the war ended, he graduated from art school in 1945.
Starting His Art Career
After graduating, Jacques was invited to show his work at an art exhibition in Paris. It was organized by a group called "La jeune gravure contemporaine" (which means "Young Contemporary Engraving"). The next year, he joined this group and started showing his art in other exhibitions. He also created beautiful stained glass art for an artist named Louis Barillet.
Studying Art History
Besides creating art, Jacques Houplain also loved to study art history. He spent time in Amsterdam, a city in the Netherlands, where he researched the work of an artist named Hercules Seghers. He also studied how Seghers influenced another famous painter, Rembrandt. Jacques even wrote a special paper, like a big school project, about this topic.
Publishing and Teaching
Jacques also learned how to make books at a school called École Estienne. This skill was very helpful for his career because it allowed him to publish his own illustrated books.
In 1949, he won an important art award called the Abd-el-Tif prize. This award allowed him to live and work in Algeria for two years. When he returned to France, Jacques began teaching art history at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art, which is a school for applied arts. He continued to work as an engraver at the same time.
In 1956, Jacques became a permanent member of the "Société des peintres-graveurs français," a society for French painter-engravers. Around this time, he met a Japanese artist named Kiyoshi Hasegawa. They became lifelong friends, and Kiyoshi had a big influence on Jacques's art.
Jacques Houplain lived a long life, creating art and teaching. He passed away on February 22, 2020, at the age of 99.
