Jade Fernandes Barbosa (born July 1, 1991) is a talented Brazilian artistic gymnast. She has won two individual bronze medals at the World Championships. Jade proudly represented Brazil at the 2008, 2016, and 2024 Olympic Games. She was part of the amazing teams that earned silver at the 2023 World Championships and bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games. These were historic moments for Brazilian gymnastics!

Jade's Gymnastics Journey

Jade Barbosa started her gymnastics career early. She became the Brazilian junior national champion in 2006. The next year, in 2007, she began competing as a senior gymnast.

Jade quickly became a popular sports star in Brazil. This happened after her first big event, the 2007 Pan American Games. In December 2007, she was even named Brazil's Sportswoman of the Year! This award had also been given to other famous gymnasts like Laís Souza and Daiane dos Santos.

Her First Big Wins in 2007

Jade won her first medal in a senior international competition at the 2007 Cottbus World Cup in Germany. She earned a silver medal on the vault.

At the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Jade showed her skills. She won a gold medal in the vault finals. This made her the only non-American woman to win a gymnastics gold at those Games. She also won a bronze medal in the floor exercise final. Plus, she helped the Brazilian team win a silver medal.

Later in 2007, Jade competed at the World Championships. She tied for the bronze medal in the all-around competition. This was a huge achievement! She also placed fifth with her team. In October 2007, she won two more silver medals at a World Cup event in Germany.

Competing in 2008

Jade started 2008 strong at the Cottbus World Cup. She won two silver medals, one on vault and one on floor. In May 2008, she won a gold medal on vault at the Moscow World Cup. She tied with Russian gymnast Anna Pavlova.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Jade helped Brazil reach the team finals. They finished in eighth place. She also competed in the individual all-around and vault finals.

Overcoming Challenges (2009–2012)

After the 2008 Olympics, Jade faced a serious injury. She couldn't compete for several months. In 2009, she returned and won first place on floor exercise at Nationals.

Her next big international competition was the 2010 World Championships. She placed third in the vault final, earning another bronze medal. The following year, at the 2011 World Championships, she finished fourth on vault. Brazil's team placed 14th, which wasn't enough to send a full team to the 2012 Olympics.

However, Brazil got another chance at the 2012 Olympic Test Event. They successfully qualified for the Olympics. Jade also won an individual gold medal on vault at this event. Unfortunately, she was not chosen for the 2012 Summer Olympics due to a disagreement with the Brazilian gymnastics federation. Jade continued to deal with injuries. She had knee surgery and returned to gymnastics in June 2015.

The 2016 Olympic Games

Jade qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics through a test event in April. Her strong performance helped the Brazilian team finish first.

At the Olympics in Rio, Jade competed in the team final. She performed well on vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. The team finished in eighth place. Jade was also chosen to compete in the all-around final. However, she got injured during her floor routine and had to stop.

At the 2019 Pan American Games, Jade got a minor injury. She couldn't compete, but her team still won the bronze medal. In October, at the World Championships, Jade injured her knee on the vault. This meant she couldn't finish the competition. This injury, along with others on her team, meant Brazil didn't qualify a full team for the 2020 Olympic Games. Jade had surgery on her knee.

Jade spent the next few years recovering from injuries. She competed in some local events in 2021 and 2022, focusing on uneven bars and balance beam. In August 2023, Jade made a big comeback at the national championships. She won first place in the all-around, which she hadn't done since 2007!
