Jade Winston Dernbach (born 3 March 1986) is a former professional cricket player. He was born in South Africa. He played for Surrey from 2003 to 2021. Jade also represented the England national team from 2011 to 2014. Later, in 2021, he played for the Italy national team.
Jade made his first big cricket match debut in 2003. He won the NBC Denis Compton Award twice, in 2004 and 2009. This award recognizes young cricketers who show great promise.
He moved to England when he was 14 years old and became a British citizen. This allowed him to play for the England cricket team. He impressed coaches while playing for the England Lions in 2011. He then joined the main England team for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Later that year, he played his first international matches against Sri Lanka. In 2021, Jade also made his international debut for Italy.
Cricket experts like Derek Pringle described Jade as a fast bowler. He could make the ball swing in different ways, which made it hard for batsmen to hit. He also used many different slower balls to trick the players.
Jade's Early Life and Cricket Journey
Jade Dernbach was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His father was South African, and his mother was Italian. He holds an Italian passport. When he was 14, in the year 2000, he moved with his family to England.
In South Africa, Jade mostly played rugby union. But after moving to England, he started to focus on cricket. He quickly moved up through the age groups at Surrey. He showed great talent as a bowler.
After being called up to the England team, Jade said that England was his home. He felt very loyal to England cricket because it had given him so many opportunities.
Playing for Surrey County Cricket Club
Jade's consistent performance and ability to take many wickets for Surrey earned him a spot on the England Lions tour in 2011. He was the first player from Surrey's youth academy to reach this level.
He continued to play well for Surrey whenever he was available. In 2011, he was named Man of the Match in the CB40 Final. His excellent bowling helped Surrey win the championship.
In 2013, Jade was a key player in Surrey's successful T20 campaign. He was the team's top wicket-taker, helping them reach the Finals Day. In July 2021, Jade played for Derbyshire for a short time on loan. He left Surrey at the end of the 2021 season.
Jade's International Cricket Career
In 2010, Jade was chosen for the England Performance Programme. He also toured the West Indies with the England Lions. He took 19 wickets during that tour, making him the best English bowler.
He was later called up to the main England team for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Although he didn't play in that tournament, it was a big step for him.
Jade made his international debut in 2011. He played his first Twenty20 International and ODI matches against Sri Lanka. He continued to play for England in many matches. He played 24 ODI matches and 34 T20I matches for England.
In the 2012 ICC World T20, Jade and Steven Finn set a record for the highest 10th wicket partnership in the tournament. Jade announced his retirement from international cricket in July 2019.
In September 2021, Jade was selected to play for the Italy squad. He made his T20I debut for Italy on 15 October 2021, playing against Denmark.
