Jaime Martín (born on September 1, 1965) is a talented Spanish musician. He is known as a conductor, who leads orchestras, and also as a flautist, someone who plays the flute.

Early Life and Musical Start

Jaime Martín was born in Santander, Spain. He started playing the flute when he was just 8 years old. By the time he was 13, he was already a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain. He learned from great teachers like Antonio Arias in Madrid and Paul Verhey in The Hague. He began his music journey as a flautist.

A Career in Music

Jaime Martín became a principal flautist for several famous orchestras. This means he was the main flute player. He played with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also often played with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

In 1991, he performed as a solo flautist at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He played a flute concerto by Nielsen. He has also recorded many chamber music pieces with groups like the Gaudier Ensemble and the Brindisi String Quartet. He even played with the famous violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Jaime Martín is also one of the people who helped start the Cadaqués Orchestra. In 1998, he started teaching the flute at the Royal College of Music in London.

Leading Orchestras as a Conductor

Jaime Martín began to focus more on conducting, which is leading an orchestra.

  • Orquesta de Cadaqués: In 2011, he became the chief conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués.
  • Gävle Symphony Orchestra: In July 2012, he became an artistic adviser for the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. A year later, in July 2013, he became their principal conductor. His contract was extended until 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, his time with the orchestra was extended by another year, ending in 2022. He has made recordings with this orchestra.
  • National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland): Jaime Martín first conducted the National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland) as a guest in September 2016. After several guest appearances, he was named their chief conductor in January 2018. He started this role in the 2019–2020 season. His contract was extended in August 2022, and he finished his time with them at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
  • Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO): In September 2017, he was a guest conductor for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). Based on this performance, he was chosen as their next music director in February 2018. He started this role in the 2019–2020 season, and his contract was extended in June 2021 to continue until 2027.
  • Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO): Jaime Martín first conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in Australia in June 2019. He returned as a guest conductor in February 2021. In June 2021, the MSO announced he would be their next chief conductor, starting in 2022. In March 2024, his contract was extended until 2028, and he also received the title of artistic adviser.

Jaime Martín has also asked composers like Ellen Reid, Andrew Norman, Missy Mazzoli, Derrick Skye, Albert Schnelzer, and Juan Pablo Contreras to create new music. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in London.

Personal Life

Jaime Martín is married to Rachel Gough. She is the principal bassoonist for the London Symphony Orchestra. They have two sons and live in London.
