Jaime Martín (born on September 1, 1965) is a Spanish musician. He is a talented conductor, who leads orchestras, and a skilled flautist, meaning he plays the flute.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Jaime Martín was born in Santander, Spain. He started learning to play the flute when he was just 8 years old. By the age of 13, he was good enough to join the National Youth Orchestra of Spain. He learned from great teachers like Antonio Arias in Madrid and Paul Verhey in The Hague. He began his professional music journey as a flautist.

A Career in Music

Jaime Martín became a top flautist in several famous orchestras. He was the main flute player for the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He played with the London Philharmonic for three years. He also often performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

In 1991, Jaime Martín had his first big solo performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. He played a flute concerto by the composer Nielsen. He has also recorded many chamber music pieces with groups like the Gaudier Ensemble and the Brindisi String Quartet. He even played with famous violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Jaime Martín also helped start the Cadaqués Orchestra. In 1998, he started teaching the flute at the Royal College of Music in London.

Leading Orchestras as a Conductor

Jaime Martín later became well-known as a conductor. A conductor is the person who stands in front of an orchestra and guides the musicians.

  • Cadaqués Orchestra: In 2011, he became the main conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués.
  • Gävle Symphony Orchestra: In 2013, he became the principal conductor of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. He stayed with them until 2022. He even recorded music with this orchestra.
  • National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland): He first conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in 2016. In 2018, they chose him as their chief conductor, starting in 2019. He led this orchestra until the middle of 2024.
  • Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra: After a guest performance in 2017, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) named him their music director in 2018. He started this role in 2019 and will continue leading LACO until at least 2027.
  • Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: In 2021, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in Australia announced Jaime Martín as their next chief conductor, starting in 2022. His contract with the MSO has been extended until 2028, and he also has the title of artistic adviser.

Jaime Martín has also asked many composers to write new music for orchestras. Some of these composers include Ellen Reid, Andrew Norman, and Missy Mazzoli. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in London, which is a special honor.

Jaime Martín is married to Rachel Gough. She is also a musician and plays the bassoon for the London Symphony Orchestra. They have two sons and live in London.
