Early Life and Musical Journey
Pinchas Zukerman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. His parents, Yehuda and Miriam Lieberman Zukerman, were Jewish. He started learning music very young, at age four, playing the recorder. His father then taught him the clarinet, and by age eight, he began playing the violin. He studied music at the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music in Israel.
When Pinchas was 14, two famous musicians, Isaac Stern and Pablo Casals, heard him play. They were very impressed. Because of their help, Zukerman moved to the United States in 1962. He went to the Juilliard School in New York City to study violin with Isaac Stern and Ivan Galamian. He performed for the first time in New York City in 1963.
In 1967, he won a major award called the Leventritt Competition alongside another talented violinist, Kyung-wha Chung. His first recordings came out in 1969. He played concertos by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn with famous orchestras. These recordings helped him start a very successful career, and he has released over 110 albums.
Conducting and Teaching Career
Pinchas Zukerman began conducting orchestras in 1970 with the English Chamber Orchestra. He was also the director of the South Bank Festival in London from 1971 to 1974. In the United States, he led the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as its music director from 1980 to 1987. He also directed summer music festivals for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
In 1999, he became the Music Director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) in Ottawa. He held this important position until 2015. Since 2009, he has also been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Zukerman is also a dedicated teacher. He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and leads the Zukerman Performance Program there. Many of his students have become successful musicians, including Julian Rachlin and Guy Braunstein. In 1999, he started the National Arts Centre Young Artists Programme. This program helps young musicians develop their skills.
His Instruments and Awards
Pinchas Zukerman plays a very special violin made in 1742 by a famous maker named Giuseppe Guarneri. This violin is known as the "Dushkin" Guarneri del Gesù.
