Pinchas Zukerman (Hebrew: פנחס צוקרמן, born 16 July 1948) is a famous Israeli-American musician. He is known as a talented violinist, violist, and conductor. He has performed all over the world for many years.

Early Life and Musical Start
Pinchas Zukerman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. His parents were Yehuda and Miriam Lieberman Zukerman. He started learning music when he was just four years old. His first instrument was the recorder.
His father then taught him to play the clarinet. When he was eight, he began learning the violin. He studied at the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music in Israel.
Moving to the United States
In 1962, two famous musicians, Isaac Stern and Pablo Casals, heard Zukerman play. They were very impressed by his violin skills. Later that year, Zukerman moved to the United States. He went to the Juilliard School in New York City. There, he continued to study violin with Isaac Stern and Ivan Galamian.
He performed for the first time in New York City in 1963. In 1967, he won a big award called the Leventritt Prize. He shared this prize with another great violinist, Kyung-wha Chung.
First Recordings and Success
In 1969, Pinchas Zukerman released his first recordings. He played violin concertos by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. These recordings helped him become very famous. He has since released over 110 recordings!
A Career in Conducting
Pinchas Zukerman also became a conductor. He started leading orchestras in 1970. His first conducting job was with the English Chamber Orchestra. From 1971 to 1974, he was the director of the South Bank Festival in London.
Leading Orchestras
In the United States, Zukerman was the music director for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He held this role from 1980 to 1987. He also directed summer music festivals. These included the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1991–95) and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (1996–99).
In 1999, he became the Music Director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO). This orchestra is in Ottawa. He led NACO until 2015. Since 2009, he has also been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Teaching and Mentoring Young Musicians
Pinchas Zukerman is also a dedicated teacher. He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music. He also leads the Zukerman Performance Program there. Many of his students have become successful musicians. Some of them include Koh Gabriel Kameda and Julian Rachlin.
In 1999, he started the National Arts Centre Young Artists Programme. This program helps young musicians develop their talents. Famous alumni include Viviane Hagner and Jessica Linnebach. He also helps young artists through the Rolex Artistic Mentorship programme.
His Special Violin and Awards
Pinchas Zukerman plays a very special violin. It is called the "Dushkin" Guarneri del Gesù violin. It was made in 1742.
He has received many honors for his musical work. These include the King Solomon Award and the National Medal of Arts. President Reagan gave him the National Medal of Arts in 1983. He also received the Isaac Stern Award for Artistic Excellence. Brown University gave him an honorary doctorate degree.
Personal Life
Pinchas Zukerman has been married three times. He married Eugenia Rich in 1968. They had two daughters, Arianna and Natalia. Both of their daughters became musicians. Arianna is an opera singer, and Natalia is a blues and folk musician. Pinchas and Eugenia often performed together.
He later married actress Tuesday Weld. Since 2004, he has been married to cellist Amanda Forsyth. They live in Manhattan and often perform music together.
Recordings and Collaborations
Pinchas Zukerman's recordings have been nominated for 21 Grammy Awards. He has won two Grammy Awards. He has worked with filmmaker Christopher Nupen on several projects. Nupen even made a documentary about him in 1974 called "Pinchas Zukerman: Here to Make Music."
In 2003, Zukerman formed a string quintet called the Zukerman Chamber Players. This group has released three CD recordings. They also perform live concerts.
