Jacob Spiker Gibb (born February 6, 1976) is an amazing American professional beach volleyball player. He is known for his powerful plays on the sand! Currently, he plays on the AVP Tour with his partner, Taylor Crabb. Gibb has represented the United States in the Olympics multiple times. He competed in the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 (held in 2021) Summer Olympics.

About Jake Gibb

Jake Gibb was born and grew up in Bountiful, Utah. When he was younger, he enjoyed playing golf and basketball. His middle name, Spiker, comes from his mother's family name.

Jake did not play volleyball when he was in college. He went to the University of Utah and finished his business degree in 2002. It wasn't until he was 21 years old that he started playing beach volleyball. He began playing with his twin brother, Coleman. Jake has a big family with ten brothers and sisters!

Jake is also known for being very strong and resilient. He has successfully overcome serious health challenges twice in his life. He and his wife, Jane, got married in 2000. They moved to Southern California in 2002 and now live in Huntington Beach, California.

Playing on the AVP Tour

The AVP Tour is a major professional beach volleyball tour in the United States. Before teaming up with Taylor Crabb in 2017, Jake played with many partners.

In 2005, Jake and his partner Stein Metzger played in 14 AVP events. They won four of these events, which was the most wins on the tour that year! They also finished second three times and third five times.

From 2006 to 2013, Jake played with Sean Rosenthal. In their first year together (2006), they won the very first AVP event they played! In 2007, they won two events and placed second seven times. In 2008, they even beat top-ranked American players Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in a big AVP final.

AVP Awards and Honors

Jake Gibb has received several important awards for his performance on the AVP Tour:

    • AVP Most Valuable Player: This award goes to the best player on the tour.
    • AVP Team of the Year (with Stein Metzger): This award recognizes the best team.
    • FIVB Top Rookie: This award is for the best new player on the international tour.
  • 2004
    • AVP Most Improved Player: This award is for the player who showed the most progress.

Competing in the Olympics

Jake Gibb has proudly represented the United States in the Olympics multiple times.

His first Olympic appearance was at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. He played with Sean Rosenthal. They made it to the quarterfinals but lost to a strong Brazilian team. They finished 5th overall.

Jake and Sean Rosenthal teamed up again for the 2012 London Olympics. They finished 5th once more after losing to a team from Latvia. Even with the disappointing finish, Jake and Sean were ranked 1st in the world on the FIVB tour that year! After this successful year, they decided to play with different partners.

For the 2016 Summer Olympics, Jake played with Casey Patterson. They represented Team USA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jake Gibb also competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics (which were held in 2021 due to the pandemic). He played with Tri Bourne because his usual partner, Taylor Crabb, had to withdraw. At 45 years old, Jake became the oldest Olympic Beach Volleyball competitor ever! They finished 9th in the tournament.
