Personal Life and Background
Jake Gibb was born and raised in Bountiful, Utah. Growing up, he was more interested in sports like golf and basketball. He did not play volleyball in high school or college. He attended the University of Utah and earned a degree in business in 2002.
Gibb started playing beach volleyball much later than most professional players. He was 21 years old when he and his twin brother, Coleman, began playing the sport for fun. He is one of eleven children in his family.
Gibb is also known for his strength off the court. He has successfully overcome serious health challenges, including two types of cancer. This shows his incredible determination and spirit.
In 2000, he married his wife, Jane. They moved to Southern California in 2002 so he could focus on his volleyball career. They live in Huntington Beach, California.
Professional Volleyball Career
Gibb turned professional in 2000 and quickly became one of the top players in the United States. He has competed on both the American AVP Tour and the international FIVB World Tour.
AVP Tour Success
The AVP Tour is the main professional beach volleyball tour in the United States. Gibb has had many victories on the tour with different partners.
In 2005, playing with Stein Metzger, the team won four AVP events, which was the most wins for any team that year. For his excellent performance, Gibb was named the AVP Most Valuable Player.
From 2006 to 2012, Gibb partnered with Sean Rosenthal. They became one of the best teams in the country. In 2008, just before the Olympics, they defeated the top-ranked American team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.
Olympic Games Journey
Competing in the Olympic Games is a major goal for many athletes, and Gibb has represented Team USA four times.
2008 and 2012 Olympics
Gibb made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, with his partner Sean Rosenthal. They played well and reached the quarterfinals.
Four years later, Gibb and Rosenthal competed together again at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They once again made it to the quarterfinals. Although they didn't win a medal, they finished 2012 as the #1 ranked team on the FIVB World Tour. After the London Olympics, Gibb and Rosenthal decided to play with new partners.
2016 and 2020 Olympics
For the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gibb teamed up with Casey Patterson.
Gibb's fourth Olympic appearance was at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which were held in 2021. At 45 years old, he became the oldest Olympic beach volleyball player in history. His original partner, Taylor Crabb, was unable to compete, so Gibb played with Tri Bourne. They finished 9th in the tournament.
