Jake Picking was born in Erlangen, Germany. His father was in the United States Army. Jake grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He played ice hockey at New York University. He was a winger on the team.

After a year, Jake left business school. He wanted to focus on acting instead. He was very interested in student film projects. Before acting, he even appeared in an NHL commercial as a hockey player.

Jake's high school math teacher helped him get into acting. He took acting lessons with Carolyn Pickman. She was a casting agent for famous actors like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
