Early Life and High School Basketball
Jalen Harris was born in Dallas, Texas. His parents, Karlin Kennedy and Erion Harris, both played basketball at SMU. Jalen has two younger brothers and one sister. His mother was a star player at SMU. She became the school's top player in points, rebounds, blocks, and field-goal percentage.
Harris grew up in Duncanville. As a child, he played basketball, football, and baseball. He stopped playing football after an injury in middle school. After that, he focused on basketball, training with his father. His father even created a travel basketball team called the Dallas Heroes for Jalen in middle school.
High School Achievements
Jalen attended Duncanville High School. By his sophomore year, he was 6 feet 3 inches tall. In his junior year, he averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. He was named the District 8-6A Offensive Player of the Year.
During an AAU event, Jalen broke a bone in his back. This injury made him miss half of his senior season. Despite this, he was again named District 8-6A Offensive Player of the Year. As a senior, he averaged 23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game. He shot 55 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. In one game against Cedar Hill High School, Harris scored a career-high 44 points. Experts at Rivals ranked him as the 16th best player in Texas. He chose to play college basketball at Louisiana Tech.
College Basketball Career
Harris started his college career at Louisiana Tech. As a freshman, he averaged 10.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team. In his sophomore year, Harris led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15.3 points per game. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He shot 44.4 percent from beyond the three-point line.
After 11 games in his sophomore season, he decided to transfer. In January 2018, he joined Nevada. He chose Nevada after seeing a game and being impressed by the coach and fans. He sat out the 2018–19 season, which is called a redshirt year.
Playing for Nevada
After his redshirt year, his coach left Nevada. Harris thought about transferring again but decided to stay. He missed his second game with Nevada due to a foot injury. In January 2020, Harris had an amazing eight-game stretch. During this time, he averaged 27 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
On February 11, he was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week. This was after he scored a career-high 38 points against Air Force. He also scored 32 points against San Diego State. On February 12, he had 29 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, and five assists in a win against UNLV. He became one of the few Nevada players to have such high numbers in a single game. Harris was the first Nevada player since 2006 to have four or more 30-point games in one season.
At the end of the regular season, Harris was named to the First Team All-Mountain West Conference. He was also named the conference newcomer of the year. He averaged 21.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. After this successful season, Harris decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft.
Professional Basketball Career
Toronto Raptors (2020–2021)
On November 18, 2020, the Toronto Raptors drafted Jalen Harris. He was the 59th pick overall in the second round of the 2020 NBA draft. On January 29, 2021, Harris was sent to the Raptors 905 in the NBA G League. On May 14, Harris scored a career-high 31 points against the Dallas Mavericks in his hometown of Dallas. On July 1, Harris faced a temporary suspension from the NBA for a rule violation. This meant he could not play during the 2021–22 season.
Vanoli Cremona (2021–2022)
On August 14, 2021, Harris signed with Vanoli Cremona. This team plays in the Lega Basket Serie A in Italy.
Scarborough Shooting Stars (2022)
