Becoming a Comic Artist
Jamal Igle knew he wanted to be a professional comic book artist when he was just 14 years old. He got his first job in comics at 17. This was an internship at DC Comics, a very famous comic book company. At that time, he was still going to the High School of Art and Design.
After high school, Jamal studied at the School of Visual Arts. He learned a lot from classic artists like Norman Rockwell. Before becoming a full-time artist, he worked in advertising and marketing.
Starting His Comic Journey
Jamal's first big chance as an artist came in 1993. He worked for smaller publishers for several years. Around 1999, he took a break from comics to work at Sony Animation. There, he drew storyboards for animated shows like Max Steel.
While at Sony, he got a call from Marvel Comics. This led him back to the world of comics. He has been working on comic books ever since.
Working on Famous Comics
Jamal Igle has worked on many different comic books. These include The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and the action series Race Against Time. He also drew for popular titles like Green Lantern, G.I. Joe, and Martian Manhunter.
He worked with writer Jay Faerber on several projects. They created a series for New Warriors and an Iron Fist/Wolverine miniseries for Marvel Comics. Jamal also became the main artist for DC Comics' Firestorm series in 2004. In 2006, he started drawing for the Nightwing comic.
Jamal has also worked on projects outside the United States. He drew a graphic novel called Army of Angels and worked on Perry Rhodan in Germany.
Special Recognition and New Adventures
In 2005, Jamal signed a special contract with DC Comics. This meant he would work only for them for a while. DC Comics called him a "triple threat" because he was so talented and reliable.
In 2011, Jamal was the artist for The Ray comic. This was part of DC's big "New 52" relaunch. In 2012, his special contract with DC Comics ended.
In 2013, Jamal started working at Action Lab Comics. He helped with marketing and public relations. He later became the Vice President of Marketing. In 2016, he left the company to focus on his own comic, Molly Danger. This comic is still published by Action Lab Comics for younger readers.
Teaching Art
Jamal Igle also shares his knowledge with others. In 2006, he joined the staff at the Art Students League of New York. More recently, in 2022, he became an instructor at the School of Visual Arts. He teaches in the BFA Comics department, helping new artists learn the ropes.
